Notary Application Information for Tennessee Counties

To become a Notary in Tennessee, you must first make application with your county clerk. This section of our site conveniently provides for you the applications and fees for various counties. If your county is not listed below, you can find the name, address, and phone number of your county’s clerk by clicking this button: The University of Tennessee County Advisory Service lists all county officials, addresses and phone numbers in this section. Be sure to click the in order to see your county information.

Request a notary application from your county clerk. The completed application and the application fee are then submitted to your local county clerk’s office. You will be notified when you are approved and your notification letter will have the exact dates of your term of office. Once you have been approved, you may apply for your bond here on BondYourself. com. You must know the exact dates of your term of office to secure your $10,000 Notary Bond. There is usually no reason to apply for your bond until you are approved and know the dates of your term of office. Be aware that each county’s procedures may vary. How To Apply to Become a Davidson County Notary at Large.

NOTE: The procedure for becoming a Notary Public is the same whether you are applying for the first time or renewing your commission.

Complete the attached applications, mail it along with a check in the amount of $12.00, made payable to, Davidson County Clerk to the following address:

Be sure and complete the application with exactly the name you wish to carry on your notary seal. If it is a renewal of your notary commission, be sure and use exactly the same name on your notary seal. If you have had a change of name since your last renewal and you wish to use your new name on your seal, you should complete the application in your new name. Each application must be approved by the Metropolitan County Council, and should be on file no later than twenty (20) days prior to the time the Metropolitan County Council meets. Council meets on the first Tuesday in January, March, May, July, September, and November.

Application For Notary Public at Large – Dekalb County

When we at BondYourself.com visited the DeKalb County Clerk’s office, we were told there was no standardized application to become a Notary Public. The Clerk requires that you list with them a home and a work address. The Clerk requires that you post a $10,000 corporate surety bond or two property owners who can indemnify you. (See article on “Personal Sureties Issue” and the risks involved under the “Notary News” section of the BondYourself.com website.) Once you are approved, the Clerk charges a $36.00 fee. This fee includes a seal. The commissions meets the 4th Monday or each month to approve Notary Public appointments. Supplementary Information for Becoming a Notary Public

  • A Notary Public Application is required by Humphrey County. Please note that the application requires a Commissioner’s signature and a Notary Acknowledgment.
  • The Clerk’s fee is $19.04 which is not payable until you are approved and sworn in.
  • The Commissioners meet the second Monday of each month to approve notary applications.

Application For Notary Public at Large – Knox County

Instructions For Filing Notary Application

  • Fill out Notary Public at Large Application (see PDF button below.)
  • Return application to Knox County Clerk’s Office, 300 Main Avenue, Suite 235, Old Courthouse with a $12.00 check made out to Knox County Clerk.
  • Notary applications must be returned by the 3rd THURSDAY of the month to be approved by the County Commission. After approval, we send a list of applications to Nashville where they issue Notary Certificates for each applicant and return to our office.
  • After the 15th of the following month, you may call our office at 215-2383 to receive your commission date.
  • Call any insurance company and purchase a $10,000.00 Surety Bond (Note from BondYourself.com – we hope you will purchase your Notary Bond from us … click HERE to order your bond!)
  • After receiving your Bond, bring it to this office where you will sign for your certificate, be sworn in, and post Bond.

The Madison County Clerk’s fee is $12.00. The fee is submitted with the completed application. Usually the commission meets the third Monday of each month. The Clerk will notify you by mail when your application is approved. Notary Public Application – Montgomery County

The Montgomery County notary public application is filed with the following fee schedule:

  • New Notary $33.72
  • Renewal Fee $12.00
  • New Notary who is a State, County or City Employee $33.40
  • Renewal Notary who is a State, County, or City Employee $12.00
    • The Notary fees include a notary seal, so you may want to inquire about a fee without the cost of the seal. The Clerk’s Office indicated that they would order the dies only for your seal for $29.89 or $28.80 if you are a State, County or City employee. You may want to visit our BondYourself.com Supply Pages and do some comparative shopping – and we’ll deliver your order to you.

      Once your application is approved, the Clerk’s Office will call to let you know you need to secure a bond before your commission is ordered. You should not order a seal or bond before you get the call from the Clerk’s Office indicating you are approved. The Clerk’s Office indicated the biggest problem they have with processing notaries, is the notary does not use EXACTLY the same name on the Notary Application as on the Notary Bond. Application For Notary Public at Large – Putnam County

Instructions For Applying To Be Notary Public At Large for Putnam County

  • Complete Application
  • Sign Oath – must be done in person at County Clerk’s Office

  • The charge for a new Notary Public is $28.65. If you are renewing your notary commission, please check with the Clerk’s office to see if it is necessary for you to have a new seal. The charge for renewing is $14.65.
  • All must be accomplished before the 3rd Monday of every month – that is when the clerk will appear before the County Commission to have the notaries elected.
  • The notary commissions and seals will be ordered the day following the County Commission meeting – it will take approximately two (2) weeks to receive the commissions and seals at which time you will be called to come in and pick them up.

Application For Notary Public for the State of Tennessee – Rutherford County

Instructions For Application For Appointment Of Tennessee Notary Public-
  • Submit completed Tennessee Notary Public for the State of Tennessee Application along with a check of $14.00 made payable to RUTHERFORD COUNTY CLERK no later than 4:00PM the day prior to the meeting of the Rutherford County Board of Commission. Please check with the Office of the Rutherford County Clerk to confirm meeting dates.
  • Approximately two (2) weeks after approval of your application by the Rutherford County Board of Commission, the Office of the Rutherford County Clerk will notify you, by mail, to secure a ($10,000.00) Notary Public Surety Bond. You may file one of the following types of bonds: (A) a surety bond from an insurance company authorized to do business in the State of Tennessee. (B) a surety bond signed by two(2) people who own property in the State of Tennessee. Please print names of personal sureties in bond section provided in the Notary Application. When notified by mail that your Tennessee Notary Commission has been received, both personal sureties will be required, to appear in person, to sign your bond in the Office of the Rutherford County Clerk.
  • Upon notification, you will be required to file one of the above mentioned surety bonds, in person, and take your Oath of Office in the Office of the Rutherford County Clerk.
  • The Tennessee Notary Public Commission Certificate will be issued to you upon completion of the above stated requirements.
Qualifications to be a Notary
  • Applicant is disqualified from holding the Office of Tennessee Notary Public if Applicant…
    • has been convicted of offering or giving a bribe, dueling, larceny or any other offense declared infamous by law (unless restored to citizenship.)
    • is a person against whom there is an unpaid judgment for money received by them in an official capacity and due to the United States, to Tennessee or any Tennessee County.
    • is a person who is a defaulter to the Treasury at the time of election.
    • is a soldier, seaman, marine, or airman in the regular army, navy or air force of the United States or a member of Congress.
    • is a person holding any office of profit or trust under any foreign power, other state or the United States.
  • It is a misdemeanor to take office as a Tennessee Notary Public if a disqualification exists. A Tennessee Notary Public- may be removed from office just as any County Official.
Term of Office

The Term of a Tennessee Notary Public is four (4) years. A Tennessee Notary Public has the authority to notarize anywhere in the State of Tennessee.

White County Notary Public Application or Renewal

Information for Applying to be a Notary Public in White County
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to secure the signature of a County Commissioner. One may contact the County Clerk to inquire as to whom a County commissioner may be.
  • Upon getting the signature of a County Commissioner, the completed application is returned to the County Clerk’s office with the proper fees.

  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to verify with the Clerk’s office after the Commissioners meeting to determine if he/she has been approved. Application For Notary Public at Large – Williamson County

Procedures for Applying to be a Notary Public in Williamson County
  • Complete an application and deliver to Clerk’s office at 1320 West Main Street, Franklin, TN. 37064. No fees will be assessed at that time. The meeting for approval is on the 3rd Monday of each month after filing with the Clerk. You will NOT be notified by the Clerk of your approval. You must contact the office at (615) 790-5712.
  • Once approved, you must go to the Clerk’s office to take the Notary oath, sign the Notary book, and pay the Clerk’s fee of $12.00. At that time, you will be required to order a bond. Because the Clerk requires you and the Surety to sign the bond book, a surety representative from BondYourself.com signs the book on the 4th Friday of each month.

  • You will have to contact the Clerk’s office to obtain your commission date. They will NOT notify you of your commission dates.

The hard copy you receive from BondYourself.com is for your records and proof of Errors and Omissions insurance.
